I found a website with good information on technical writing - check out the Technical Writer entry at the California Employment Development Department.
Also, if you do not yet have a copy of the 2007 Writer's Market, pick one up. They have the hourly wages (high, low and average) for technical writers as well as listings for 75+ publishers that a technical writer can submit to.
